Northeast Health Wangaratta is the major regional health service and specialist referral centre for northeast Victoria. It serves a population of approximately 90,000 and has approximately 19,000 inpatient episodes and 25,000 Emergency Department attendances a year. The Emergency Department is staffed by great people who do a tremendous job of providing high quality care in the only 24-hour Emergency Department on the Hume highway between Melbourne and Albury-Wodonga.
Resident Specialist medical services include General and Orthopaedic Surgery, Urology, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Adult and Paediatric Medicine, Geriatrics, Rehabilitation Medicine and Psychiatry. Visiting Specialist services include Urogynaecology, and ENT and Paediatric Surgery.
The Emergency Department has a four-bed short stay unit. Extensive redevelopment in the next two years will expand the ED by four treatment spaces and an additional four short stay beds. NHW has an 8 bed CCU (which will be replaced by a new 12-bed unit) and three operating theatres and is a Rural Trauma Service. It is supported by a state-of-the-art Radiology department (with CT and MRI) in addition to Pathology and Nuclear Medicine.
The University of Melbourne’s Rural Clinical School has a node located in Wangaratta with medical students completing their clinical studies at NHW and additional medical students rotate from Melbourne teaching hospitals.
Wangaratta is surrounded by beautiful countryside, the Alps and wineries, with a host of recreational and lifestyle choices on offer. It has excellent schools and is just 45 minutes from Albury or two hours freeway driving from Melbourne.
You need to have Registration with the Medical Board of Australia and appropriate experience and qualifications such as EMST, APLS etc. Fellowship of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine, the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners or the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (or equivalent) is highly desirable.
